This level 6 one-year top-up degree consolidates and elevates the interior and spatial design skills established in level 4 and 5, empowering students to transition confidently into professional practice.

With a unique level of autonomy, you will apply industry research to design your own project brief that responds to the needs of the sector and the changing shape of the interior, architectural and design industries.

The academic year follows the design cycle allowing you to plan, develop and realise projects with specialist tutor support, building a portfolio that represents your personal design style and skillset. You are encouraged to collaborate with your peers, participate in workshops and engage with guest speakers to develop professional competencies.

Informed by industry experts, this degree gives you the opportunity to engage with live briefs, facilitating experience of vocational demands, expectations and standards. The programme team collaborates with respected local studios including George Smith, Aptus and AND + Studios: some of which may provide a live brief and guest talks.

Entry requirements

Pass or higher in a Level 5 Foundation Degree, Diploma in Higher Education or HND (in related Art and Design subjects).

Once your application has been reviewed, you will be asked to submit a digital portfolio (details will follow through an email from our Admissions Team) or you will be invited to Newcastle College University Centre to discuss your portfolio in-person.

If you are a current Newcastle College student and you successfully meet the published Level 5 entry criteria in an appropriate subject[s], you will be guaranteed a place on this course.

Applicants are normally expected to have achieved grade 4 or higher in GCSE Maths and English Language or the Level 2 equivalents (i.e. Functional Skills or Adult Literacy/Numeracy).

At Newcastle College University Centre we welcome applications from students studying new T-Level qualifications.

Work Experience

Becoming part of the Art and Design community at NCUC offers a valuable opportunity, mimicking real world collaborations and working on cross-disciplinary projects supports students in refining their individual creative identity.

You can attend industry related trips alongside other art and design programmes such as trade shows, studio and exhibition visits.

In addition to the programme team's industry experience - where collaboration opportunities and live briefs are offered - , you will have access to employability support, business start-up mentorship (competitive) and Mandela collective opportunities.

Where can I progress?

Once you have successfully completed the BA (Hons) Interior and Spatial Design (Top-Up) degree, you can progress your studies and study the MA Creative and Professional Practice (Visual Arts) with Newcastle College University Centre, or a PGCE. You will also be able to take up a role in the interiors, architectural, product, multi-disciplined design and furniture industries.
